Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Frequently asked questions

If you are new to massage therapy, I understand that you might have some questions. I am happy to answer any questions.

Below are the answers to the questions that are most commonly asked about massage therapy treatment. Should you have additional questions please feel free to contact me.

How will massage therapy benefit me?

Therapeutic massage delivered by a skilled therapist commonly reduces muscle and joint pain and aids individuals in returning to work and other activities of daily living. Massage Therapy also is known to promote a state of relaxation, with the resulting emotional benefits of reduced anxiety. Massage Therapy can benefit individuals experiencing stress-related problems and a variety musculoskeletal complaints.

After an appropriate assessment is made, massage treatments are tailored to meet your specific needs.

How old does a person need to be to receive massage therapy?

Any age. Massage therapy treatments are effective from birth until palliative care stages. Children will require the written consent and the presence of their parent or guardian.

Is massage treatment painful?

The physical nature of the treatment does cause some initial short term discomfort and later in the same day, patients sometimes feel increased pain due to the release of inflammation so essential to their recovery.

Clients are often surprised by how comfortable Massage therapy is at 'Lavender Fields Therapy Clinic'. I use techniques which vary from being extremely gentle to a little firmer, depending on the cause of the pain. For example, if muscles are tight, and need deep massage then this is sometimes slightly uncomfortable but I work within your pain threshold and vary treatment accordingly. I also treat people in extreme pain and babies and children who will not tolerate some techniques, so gentle methods of treatment are used.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a stranger touching me

It is not uncommon for first-time clients to be apprehensive with the personal nature of massage therapy. Most clients lose this apprehension within the first few minutes of treatment. Massage therapists are trained professionals who respect your feelings and go out of their way to allow you to feel comfortable during your treatment experience.

Will I have to undress?

This concerns many people and does not need to be a problem at all. At 'Lavender Fields Therapy Clinic' I am trained to look at posture, muscle tightness, strain and movement restrictions . Most physical treatment requires the patient to undress down to their underwear. In the case of Bowen Technique therapy loose clothing is suitable.

How long does a treatment take?

Your first appointment includes discusing a thorough health questionnaire as well as tests and treatment and takes 1 hour. Follow-up treatments take 30-60 minutes although occasionally you may need to allow a little more time.

How Will I Feel After a Massage?

Most patients feel calm and relaxed after a treatment. Occasionally, patients experience mild temporary aching for a day.

Should I talk during the massage?

Although some people prefer to talk throughout the massage, don't feel that you have to make conversation with your therapist.

Feel free to close your eyes and relax, which is what most people do.

Deep tissue massage and sports massage are just some of the types of massage that require more feedback. Your massage therapist often works on deeper layers of muscle and will want to ensure that the pressure is not uncomfortable.

Be sure to speak up if:

  • the room is too hot or too cold
  • you experience pain
  • you have any questions related to the massage
  • there's anything you forgot to mention during the consultation

How often will I need to attend?

This is the most difficult question I am asked!  It depends on so many different factors such as, whether the condition is acute or chronic, the patient's age,  lifestyle,  ability to rest, etc.   Often an absolute accurate timing is impossible to give, because everyone heals at different rates  - however I will try to give you a guide based on my initial diagnosis and the treatment sessions received.

How much does it cost?

My 2015 prices are charge £25 for 30 mins: £40 for 60 mins: £65 for 90 mins. An initial appointment, which includes assessment (discussing questionnaire and examination) and treatment is £40.

You can be reassured that I am comparable with other therapists in the area. If you consider the impact of your pain on your health, it is a small price to pay and many of my patients say they wish they had sought treatment earlier, which usually results in speedier effects too.

Do you offer massage gift vouchers?

Yes I do! A therapeutic massage is a great way to make a lasting impression on that special someone by giving them the gift of massage. Whether for therapic purposes or simply relaxation, massage makes a great gift.
